  • Chaparral, Saguaro Student Athletes Receive Accolades

    We knew they were good, but now, so does everyone else!

    Congratulations to the following members of SUSD's Class of 2024 who received top honors at this week's Arizona Republic Arizona High School Sports Awards ceremony:

    Raegan Capizzi, Chaparral HS, Girls Golfer of the Year
    Raegan is headed to the University of Denver to play golf.

    Hudson Schuricht, Chaparral HS, Boys Swimmer of the Year
    Hudson will swim for North Carolina State and study engineering.

    Cam Caminiti, Saguaro HS, Baseball Player of the Year
    Cam will play ball for Louisiana State and is expected to be drafted in next month's MLB draft.

  • Melinda Splitek named Coronado HS principal as Amy Hardy takes helm at Mountainside

    The Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board has appointed Melinda Splitek as Coronado High School’s next principal and Amy Hardy as Mountainside Middle School’s new principal.

    The action was taken at the Board’s June 11 meeting.

  • ‘Double Dads’ use father skills at work

    The “Double Dads” of Scottsdale celebrating Father's Day today can hardly imagine such vile parenting.

    Being a great father at home simply is not enough for this crew, who also exhibit fatherly traits in the workplace.

    After becoming a father fairly late in life, Jim Herrera couldn’t get enough of it.

  • Mary Alvarez-Jackson wins inaugural SUSD ERDI Resilient Leader scholarship

    Earlier this year, Scottsdale Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel was named the first recipient of the Education Research and Development Institute’s Resilient Leader Award.  As part of the award, Dr. Menzel was granted a full-ride, master’s level scholarship at the American College of Education to bestow upon an emerging Scottsdale Unified School District leader.  

    "We are thrilled to announce that the inaugural winner of the ERDI Resilient Leader Scholarship is Mary Alvarez-Jackson, a dedicated, third grade teacher at Yavapai Elementary School in the Coronado Learning Community," Dr. Menzel said. “This recognition not only honors Mary’s dedication and hard work, but truly embodies the spirit of resilience and leadership that our district values.”

  • Desert Mountain's Lilly Goodwin named Arizona Gatorade HS Softball Player of the Year

    Scottsdale Desert Mountain sophomore softball pitcher and first baseman Lilly Goodwin is building one of the state’s storied careers.

    She’s only two years into her high school career, but Goodwin has already racked up back-to-back 5A state championships with the Wolves. Goodwin can add Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year to her ever-growing trophy cabinet.

  • Saguaro's Cam Caminiti named Gatorade Arizona High School Baseball Player of the Year

    Scottsdale Saguaro senior left-hander/center fielder Cam Caminiti capped a brilliant high school baseball career with a state championship.

    Now he's the Gatorade Arizona High School Baseball Player of the Year.

    Caminiti, a generational talent, dominated on the mound after reclassifying from 2025 to 2024 last summer and showing why he's ready to become a top Major League Baseball draft pick in July.

  • ASU’s Fulton School salutes Scottsdale grad

    Arizona State University 2024 graduate  Jake Okun was named Outstanding Graduate by the Fulton Schools of Engineering and the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks earlier this month. 

    The Scottsdale resident graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA from Barrett, The Honors College and “continues to leave everyone speechless with his academic prowess and innovative contributions to the field of engineering,” the university said in an announcement.

  • Class of 2024's Arcadia News 2024 Scholarship Winner

    If there’s one thing Nola Williams knows, it’s how to create a goal and make it happen.

    Nola will head to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in the fall to major in journalism and minor in economics.

  • Innovation Grant “STEMs” new learning opportunities

    Earlier this spring, Echo Canyon third-grade teacher Kelley Tully received an email that would significantly change the course of her curriculum. The email stated that she received a $10,000 Innovation Grant from Scottsdale Unified School District. 

    Tully said she loves to expose her class to STEM-based activities throughout the school year, but has limited resources to work with. After receiving a district-wide email detailing the Innovation Grant, she “thought it would be a great opportunity to try and get funding to expand these unique learning initiatives here at Echo Canyon.”
