SUSD Excels in Retaining Early-Career Teachers, Bucking State Trends

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (December 4, 2023) – In a notable achievement, the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is outperforming the state in retaining first- to fourth-year teachers, showcasing the district's commitment to building a committed and experienced teaching staff.

According to the latest data, SUSD's retention rates for early-career teachers surpass state averages. In 2022, early-career teachers in SUSD stayed at a rate of 76%, versus the overall Arizona rate of 69%. Additionally, just 2.45% of SUSD teachers switched school districts; the state rate was 5.24%, a demonstration of the district's success in creating an environment that encourages educators to stay with the school district and grow in their careers.

“In a landscape where teacher shortages are a growing concern, SUSD stands out as a destination for educators,” said Alexis Wilson, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. “We have implemented strategies in line with our Strategic Plan to retain valuable teaching talent, such as prioritizing professional development, mentorship programs, and a supportive work environment.

“Our ultimate goal is to ensure a safe, positive and stable learning environment for both educators and students, because kids!” Wilson stated.

The data also underscores SUSD's dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students.

“Experienced teachers, with their wealth of knowledge and honed skills, play a pivotal role in enhancing student academic achievement,” said Dr. Karen Benson, SUSD’s Associate Superintendent. “The district's emphasis on retaining experienced teachers positively impacts student outcomes and contributes to SUSD’s legacy of success.”

Teacher recruitment and retention has been a nationwide challenge in recent years, making SUSD's success in this area a testament to the district's commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging work environment. As other districts grapple with staffing shortages, SUSD remains an Arizona education employment destination in attracting and retaining top-tier teaching talent. #WherePassionMeetsPurpose #BecauseKids #SUSDAdvantage
